Dr. M. Ahmed Ali, a reputed surgical gastroenterologist, hailing from Ambur, a town in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, and practising in Chennai has been selected for Padma Shri award. He has been associated with Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals in Chennai for nearly four decades. Before coming over here he had served in some government hospitals. He goes to his native place once a week to treat patients there.
I have heard people say that Allah has given him the ability and opportunity to serve people. He was also honoured as Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) by the Tamil Nadu M.G.R. University sometime ago.
His childhood friends who studied with him in the Mazharul Uloom High School, Ambur say that he was a genius and his ambition was to excel in studies and prove his mettle and by Allah’s grace he was successful in it. It is said that his father wanted him to pass IAS and become a Collector but somehow medical science attracted him and made him what he is today. According to his friends, he had an extraordinary memory and was a voracious reader. He had won the hearts of his teachers as an obedient, hard working and intelligent student. He always came out with flying colours in all his endeavours.
In a conversation when I wanted to know about Dr. Ahmed Ali, his boyhood friend Mr. Ko. Shafee Ahmed said, “I and Dr. Ahmed Ali were class mates in Mazharul Uloom elementary as well as Mazharul uloom high school of Ambur. He had a photographic memory and a thirst for knowledge. Once our school Meeladun Nabi function was fast approaching and preparations were in full swing. Our teacher Urdu Munshi Janab Abdur Rahman saheb wanted a few students to get ready by memorizing the life story of Prophet Mohammed (sal-am). It was in twenty pages. He wanted them to memorize ten pages within a week or so. But Ahmed Ali appeared before the teacher the very next day and recited all the twenty pages to the pleasant surprise of one and all. The teacher was very happy and blessed him with a reward. After S.S.L.C. he joined the Islamiah College, Vaniyambadi and did his Pre-University. He passed all the examinations with distinction. Then he joined the Madras Medical College, Chennai and did his M.B.B.S. and then his M.S. and M.Ch.”
In a felicitation function arranged at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, hospital directors, colleagues, friends and students paid high tributes to him. He was praised for his inborn leadership qualities, efficiency and diligence as a teacher, making competent medical professionals and keeping everyone smiling even during the toughest times. Mr. Dilip Mehta, executive director of the hospital has said that Dr.Mehta’s Hospitals is immensely proud of his achievements.
To my knowledge, no other Muslim doctor from Tamil Nadu has ever received any Padma award from the government so far. Dr. Ahmed Ali is the first Muslim doctor to receive it in the state. Dr. Ahmed Ali is a devoted Muslim, an excellent surgeon and a good human being.. We are proud of him. Let us congratulate and pray for his good health, long life and success in all his endeavours.
